The Austin Sol earned their first lead of the game with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation and never looked back on the way to their second South Division title. Austin’s defense was instrumental in leading the team’s second half comeback by generating pressure in the reset spaces of Carolina’s throwers, and cashing in numerous break scores in transition. Nine different Sol players finished with a block, and the team as a whole was a perfect 17-of-17 on red zone chances.
It is the second divisional title for the Sol in the past four seasons, and they will advance to the league semifinals on August 27 at Championship Weekend in Madison, WI. Austin and Carolina have now met four times in the playoffs since 2022, with each team winning two games apiece.
Both teams struggled with errors at the start of the game and combined for 14 first quarter turnovers. The visiting Flyers took an early 2-0 lead after Drew Swanson’s handblock led to an easy break score in transition. Carolina would finish the first frame with seven blocks, a takeaway number they would equal over the next three quarters combined.
Despite the early deficit, the Sol remained steadfast on the heels of the Flyers thanks to Austin’s veteran-led offensive play. The O-line wasn’t always consistent—Kyle Henke had more throwaways (5) than assists (4)—but they converted when it counted. The elder Henke, D-line convert Matt Armour, and Jackson Potts (making his 2026 season debut) all finished with four helpers apiece, while Mark Henke collected a game-high seven goals, with a majority coming in close quarters, high leverage situations. Kyle’s mistakes were balanced by his throwing aggressiveness and four completed hucks, but Potts deserves a special shoutout for finishing with five total scores and 463 yards without a turnover in his first game back following last year’s season-ending knee injury; according to Shown Space, Potts had the 10th best single-game performance for the Sol this season, and had a game-best 14.4 percent win probability add in tonight’s divisional title bout.
Defensively, and as they’ve done all season, the Sol generated enough second half takeaways to win the game. A pivotal sequence in the match came with less than six minutes left in the fourth quarter and Carolina in possession of the disc. Jacob Fairfax caught a screaming line drive on the doorstep of the endzone, but a lackadaisical scoober throw allowed first-year Austin defender Aaron Barcio to get a paw on the disc and force an endzone turnover. A few throws later, Barcio would find college teammate Owen Johnson for the break score and a two-goal lead they would not relinquish.
“We’re going to Champ Weekend,” said Kyle Henke in a postgame interview. “I’m proud of this team. We showed them we’re the better team today.”
