UFA's Philadelphia Phoenix Announce New Coaching Staff

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (December 19, 2024) - The Philadelphia Phoenix of the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) have named David Brandolph head coach and Bill Maroon assistant coach for the team starting in the 2025 season. The Phoenix will celebrate their 13th season in the league and have numerous fan events and surprises in store for Hotbird Summer presented by Summerseat Crush.

“Brandolph and Billy are legends in the Philadelphia ultimate frisbee community,” said team majority owner Dr. Christina Lee Chung. “Their reputations precede them and we are fortunate to have them both leading the team, on and off the field. We collectively believe the time is now for the Phoenix to compete at the highest level, and the goal is to play at Championship Weekend.”

David has been playing ultimate frisbee since 2005, gathering numerous accolades along the way. He was a core piece of the Philadelphia Spinners that won the inaugural league championship in 2012 and won the Eastern Conference MVP in 2013. David has extensive experience playing in the Club Men’s Division of USA Ultimate (USAU), and previously helped coach the Phoenix in 2015.  

“My life in ultimate has truly come full circle,” said David. “Competing and winning at the highest level has inspired me to teach and develop talent, and there’s no better place to do that than Philadelphia. The Phoenix are an outstanding organization and I’m excited to coach alongside a great friend and colleague in Bill.”

Bill has been playing and coaching ultimate for 25 years, also playing and coaching for the 2012 champion Spinners. He coached professional ultimate from 2012 to 2015, and also claimed two national titles in the USAU Masters Division and two World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) World Championships. Bill is also the father of 2024 Phoenix rookie Michael Maroon.

David and Bill will host Philadelphia’s 2025 Open Tryouts presented by Summerseat Crush on Saturday, January 11, at the University of Pennsylvania Bubble.
