Flyers vs San Diego Growlers Recap: May 23rd, 2025

By Noam Gumerman

The Carolina Flyers fell in heartbreaking fashion at home to the San Diego Growlers in double overtime Friday night, 26-25. It was a thrilling game, both teams looked to have locked the game up at different points in the fourth quarter, the Flyers came back furiously to tie the game and then take a late lead, before the Growlers tied things up at the absolute last second. In overtime the Flyers again took the advantage before the Growlers equalized, and eventually broke to win in sudden-death double overtime.

The Flyers had numerous chances to come away with their first win of the season. They took their first lead of the second half with just 40 seconds left in the game, after numerous break opportunities had gone awry. An excellent pull from William Coffin pinned the Growlers deep, and when it mattered most Ethan Bloodworth came up with the block, and the eventual score after the O-line came on. The Flyers then broke to start overtime, traded holds with Growlers, and then earned a possession and an opportunity to break and go up two at 25-24 with just minutes left. Unfortunately, a short field turnover gave San Diego a chance to tie the game, and in double overtime, a missed huck from the Flyers let the Growlers break to win the game on their first possession which they did.

Allan Laviolette picked up a knock and was out for overtime, which was a blow to the Flyers offense. Laviolette put on an offensive clinic, throwing nine(!) assists, scoring twice, and ending the game with nearly 700 yards of offense. John McDonnell was also all over the stat sheet with 640 throwing yards and five assists.

The Flyers fall to 0-4, and will look to find their first win of the season May 31 on the road in Philadelphia.
