James grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and attended nearby Oberlin College to play for the Flying Horsecows. He played in the first ever DIII Nationals and returned to coach the Horsecows the following year. Afterwards he moved to Denver and played five years of Inception Ultimate before relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada. Current owner and founder of the Vegas Bighorns.
